What will my appraisal cost?
Appraisals are paid work — that's what keeps the number honest when Dreadnought is also a buyer. Two simple rates — $60 per hour, or a $200 flat rate for a small collection. Pick what you have and see your price before you send anything.
Selling? The photo review that leads to an offer is free — you only pay if you want a full written appraisal to keep or compare.
The $200 flat rate covers a small collection, confirmed from your photos before any work starts. Anything larger is billed hourly at $60 — with a time estimate given up front.
Flat rate — $200 for a small collection, no hourly clock running.
Your rate is confirmed after we see the photos and before any work starts — if a collection is too large for the flat rate, we'll quote the hourly time up front.

Estates & collections
Selling an estate or a collection? We can help manage the whole sale.
You don't have to sort it, price it, and sell it piece by piece yourself — and you don't have to sell it all to Dreadnought, either. For families, executors, and collectors downsizing, we can help manage selling an estate or collection from first look to final sale:
- Sort & inventory the whole lot — albums, boxes, and accumulations, itemized so everyone in the family can see what's there.
- Appraise it first — $60 per hour, or the $200 flat rate if the collection is small, so pricing decisions start from real values.
- A selling plan — what Dreadnought can buy outright, what's better sold online or at auction, and what's worth grading first.
- Help with the selling itself — guidance on listings and local sales, with one point of contact for the family or executor. Or skip it all: ask for one clean offer for the whole lot.
How it works
Digital first, local when it counts
No storefront to drive to for a first answer. The whole first step happens from your phone.
Send photos
Front and back of each coin, in daylight, on a plain background. Group shots are fine for bulk silver. Use the form below — it sends straight to Dreadnought, photos included.
Get a straight answer
An appraisal at $60/hour — or $200 flat for a small collection — or a preliminary buy range (free if you're selling). If photos aren't enough, we'll say exactly what else we need.
Meet in the Salt Lake Valley
Ready to sell or need an in-hand look? We meet by appointment in a public, comfortable spot in the Salt Lake Valley — a bank lobby works well for larger deals.
Get paid, or keep it
Agree on a price and you're paid the same day. Don't agree? Your appraisal is yours to keep, shop around, or use for insurance — no hard feelings.
Paid appraisals
Appraisal pricing, up front
An appraisal you pay for works for you — not for the buyer. That's the point. Two rates, no tiers to decode: $60 per hour, or a $200 flat rate for a small collection. Every appraisal includes what each coin is, why it's valued that way, and what to watch for (cleaning, damage, counterfeits).
Hourly Appraisal
Best for a few coins, a single valuable piece, or adding to an appraisal already in progress.
- Billed at $60 per hour for appraisal time
- ID, grade estimate & value for each coin
- Flags for key dates, cleaning & fakes
- Time estimate given up front, before work starts
- From photos, or in hand in the Salt Lake Valley by appointment
Small Collection — Flat Rate
One set price for a whole small collection — no hourly clock, no surprise at the end.
- $200 flat rate for a small collection
- Whole lot sorted & itemized
- ID, grade estimate & value for each coin
- Confirmed as a “small collection” from your photos first
- One clean buy offer too, if you want to sell
Larger Collections & Estates
For albums, boxes and full estates that are too large for the flat rate.
- Billed hourly at the same $60 rate
- Sorting & inventory of the whole lot
- Itemized values for the full collection
- Time estimate quoted after we see photos
- Help managing the sale of the collection, too
- By appointment — Salt Lake Valley
Appraisals are billed at $60 per hour, with a $200 flat rate for small collections (confirmed from photos before work starts). Appraisals are opinion-of-value for insurance, estate, and personal use — not a PCGS/NGC certification. If a coin deserves professional grading, we'll tell you and help you weigh the cost.
Serving the Salt Lake Valley
Local meets across the Salt Lake Valley
Photo appraisals work from anywhere — send them from your couch. For in-hand appraisals and selling, we meet by appointment across the Salt Lake Valley. Ship-insured options are available for graded and higher-value coins outside the area.

- Daylight, no flash. Near a window beats a lamp — toning and luster read honestly.
- Both sides, every coin. Mint marks live on the back — that's where the money often is.
- Don't clean anything. A cleaned coin can lose half its value. As-found is always better.
- Add a coin or ruler for scale on anything unusual, foreign, or ancient.

Questions
Before you send photos
Why charge for appraisals if you also buy coins?
Because a free “appraisal” from a buyer is really just an offer. A paid appraisal is priced to be honest whether or not you sell to Dreadnought — you get the value, the reasoning, and a document you can take anywhere, including to another buyer.
Is the preliminary offer for selling really free?
Yes. Send photos, get a range. If the range works for you, we meet locally (or arrange insured shipping) and confirm the final price in hand — coins are verified before payment, so the final number can move if a coin turns out cleaned, damaged, or not as photographed.
Do you have a store I can walk into?
Not yet — Dreadnought is digital-first by design. That keeps overhead (and prices) down. Everything starts online, and local Salt Lake Valley meetings are by appointment in a public place that works for both sides.
Should I clean or polish my coins first?
No — please don't. Cleaning is the fastest way to cut a coin's value, sometimes in half. Dust them off with a dry, soft cloth at most, and send photos exactly as they are.
What if my coins turn out to be worth very little?
You'll hear that straight, with the reason why — common-date, worn, or modern issues often trade near face or melt value. For a paid appraisal you'll still get the full itemized answer; for a free sell review, we'll tell you your best option even if it isn't us.
Can you help us sell an estate or collection, not just buy it?
Yes. Dreadnought can help manage the sale end to end: sorting and inventorying the whole lot, appraising it ($60 per hour, or the $200 flat rate if it's small), building a plan for what to sell where — outright to Dreadnought, online, or at auction — and helping with listings and local sales so the family or executor isn't doing it alone. If you'd rather be finished in one step, we can also make a single offer for the entire collection.
Can you appraise an estate for probate or family division?
Yes — estates are appraised at $60 per hour, or the $200 flat rate if the collection is small, with replacement and resale values noted separately. If your situation needs a credentialed appraiser for court or tax filing, tell us up front and we'll be clear about what our document can and can't be used for.
